How much SL / TP is typical? (general guidance, not a rule)

There’s no single “correct” number — it depends on your timeframe, strategy, and how the pair is currently moving. These are common reference ranges traders use, not a guarantee:

  • Scalping (1–5 min chart): SL often 5–15 pips, TP 10–25 pips
  • Intraday (15 min–1 hr chart): SL often 15–30 pips, TP 30–60 pips
  • Swing (4 hr–daily chart): SL often 40–100+ pips, TP 80–200+ pips
  • Around high-impact news (like CPI): Many traders widen SL to 30–50+ pips because of the sharp initial spike, or wait for the spike to settle before entering

A common rule of thumb is keeping Risk:Reward at least 1:1.5 to 1:2 — meaning your take profit target is 1.5–2x further away than your stop loss. This way, even if you’re right less than half the time, you can still be profitable overall.

The stop loss should also make technical sense — placed beyond a real support/resistance level or swing point, not just picked as a round number of pips.
